Casey Boyd receives a Student of the Month certificate from Rotary Club President Gordon Allott. Also present were, from left, Castle View High School Principal James Calhoun, Boyd’s sister Mackenzie, mother Kara and father Steve.

Casey Boyd has been honored as the Rotary Club of Castle Rock’s Student of the Month for April 2016.

Boyd, a senior at Castle View High School, carries a 3.8 grade point average and ranks in the top 20 percent of his class. He has been very active in school, belonging to the Technology Student Association and the National Honor Society. His project to bring Christmas toys and supplies to students on the Pine Ridge Native American reservation in South Dakota was selected for a national award by the National Honor Society.

Boyd also was on the school’s yearbook staff for two years.

Outside of school he was very active in Boy Scouts, being admitted to the Order of the Arrow, a Boy Scout Honor Society.

CVHS Principal James Calhoun introduced Boyd to the Rotary club by saying he was a student with a unique spirit and a desire to help others. He cited his accomplishments in math, going from Math I to AP calculus in four years. He also cited the Pine Ridge project in which Boyd spent more than 300 hours and collected more than $1,000 worth of gifts and supplies and then drove them to South Dakota.

Calhoun said Boyd’s teachers call him an exceptional student who does extra work, is generous with his contributions in class, works with others well and is an outstanding representative of the school. He was also cited for his drive to succeed and his work ethic.

Boyd told the club that his Pine Ridge project was the best experience of his life. He said it was his goal to show the students on the reservation that people outside the reservation cared about them, and to show them they have a future.

“I really appreciated the opportunity to show others that I care,” Boyd said.

He said that as he delivered packages to each classroom, “it was incredible to see the reaction on their faces” when the wrapped gifts were opened. Besides toys there were gloves, scarfs, hats and socks.

Boyd said he wants to study chemistry in college and hopes to attend the University of Colorado, UC Denver or the University of Denver.
