Mattysen Short accepts a Student of the Month plaque from club President Wes Shunneman, right. Also at the presentation was Castle View High School Assistant Principal Ryan Hollingshead, left.
Mattysen Short, a senior at Castle View High School, has been selected at the Rotary Student of the Month for October. She was presented the award at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Castle Rock
Short is the vice-president of the Cyber Security Club at the school; is a team mascot and the secretary of the America Rocketry Challenge Club team.  She also is copresident of the Future Business Leaders of America club.
She has taken high-level AP and college classes throughout high school and is on the President’s Honor Roll. She carries a 3.72 grade point average.
Assistant Principal Ryan Holliingshead told the club Short was running the school’s website and started the school’s cyber security club and has been its strongest advocate.
He said Short is heavily involved is the school’s science, technology and computer programs and at the same time has competed in state competition with the FBLA. She also is a leader in the LINK Crew, which helps freshmen adjust to high school.
Hollingshead said Short’s teachers said she is a student who uses a lot of initiative to get things done.
Short told the club she has started a non-profit firm to help defend underserved populations in the Denver metro area. She said she would like to turn that into a for profit business and to “get on to that train and ride it for a while.” If that works, she said, she would like to take the money from that to start another business.
If that doesn’t work, she will go to college to study computer science.
