Dr. Tanyss Munro | Co-founder & Executive Director
Amarok Society

Dr. Tanyss Munro has devoted her life, with her husband, best-selling author Gem Munro, to improving educational opportunities for disadvantaged people across Canada and abroad. Through her work as an educator with remote native communities, as senior advisor to federal Ministers, to Regional Tribal political organizations, and to the Commonwealth, Tanyss and her husband Gem have had the privilege of getting to really know life in communities ranging from Arctic hamlets to Parliament Hill and the sprawling slums of mega-cities. In response to observing the impact of no education for millions of the world’s poorest children, Tanyss and Gem founded Amarok Society in 2006 in the slums of Bangladesh and Pakistan – with 24 schools reaching over 3,000 children and families a year. For their work, they were recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals.
